I will talk and you will listen
is what I said as I sat her down
"Listen love I’ve been thinkin’"
she knew I’d been drinkin’
but nevertheless she made not a sound
when I declared my love she looked above
as if she had something to say
I knew I’d failed but I’d tried
she sat down and cried
and said it just wasn’t her day
I wouldn’t have changed the way things were
we were a very good couple you know
beyond my beliefs she didn’t leave
my heart jumped a beat then she refused to go
she said it was wrong and it couldn’t go on
man that hit me like a ton of bricks
she slammed the door and said no more
but I swear I was up to no tricks
she didn’t answer when I called her later
so I left a message on her machine
I said it was true, that I meant every word, too
and that what she’d done was just plain mean
she never returned the call, I didn’t see her at all
I guessed it was for the good
after the way things went I couldn’t face her again
but I wouldn’t trade the experience if I could
