Two little birds
worlds apart
I look at you
the way you were
and see so many changes
A bird in a cage
consumed by anger, hatred, fear
rebelling inwardly against the bars
you flew into the cage
made the mistake
not to realise
that food inside was meant to trap you
who closed the door, probably you
The cage grew to be familiar and safe
It seemed that you were
in the right place
admired for your beautiful feathers
to be sheltered and fed
But somehow you knew
your wings were meant for flying
You waisted time in fear of trying
but all the time the wings were there
to remind you
and as time passed you came to see
that it was not fear of flying
that held you back
but fear of falling
Fear of the unknown
uncertainties about food and shelter
how could you know if you could survive
then one day you decided
that you were slowly dying
despite the food, despite the shelter
for your instincts knew
that you were meant to fly
to live and soar the skies
you just didn't know how
that day you changed
you broke the cage
and as you hoped
your wings carried you away
for the very first time
you had to cope
all by yourself
and fight for your survival
A new world opened up to you
a world you were meant to see
from that day forward
your strength grew
and every challenge faced
made you rejoice
and proud to have left the cage
to have made your choice
Now many see your beautiful colours
and ooh and aah at what they see
but better still, inside your heart
you are wiser, stronger
than you ever imagined you could be
You are capable of finding food
you find shelter every night
just like you hoped you might
The funny thing, on looking back
those things have lost priority
in this new world you've come to see
that other things matter much more
to feel the air beneath your wings
to truly see what lies beneath
and above the clouds through which you soar
sometimes you doubt
if what you did was really right
when you get tired and unsure
you think back of the cage
and remember just how easy it was
to sit there and be fed each day
but never ever do you wish
to trade and be trapped that way again
your hate is gone, your anger too
you are compassionate and kind
'it's ironic' you will say
how something seems so wrong
once you were looked after
for being pretty, singing your song
As you changed and freed your soul
resistance came your way
Noone appreciates your happiness
since you have flown away
but freedom is a funny thing
it's natural you have to learn
a prized possession is hard to lose
they were selfish, locked you up
Those who kept you did not know
that if you truly love something
despite the loss, you have to let it go
In your new world you can see
that others know this, let you be
admire you but from afar
see your beauty, just as you are
The little bird you used to be
has slowly died to be replaced
when you emerged from your cage
Although once you both were one
You are now worlds apart
You are the one who will live on
don't look back
and bless that day
you chose to be free,
and spread your wings, flew far away
