Als een boom volkomen zijn, uit één stuk
een gerechte zijn, en onbeschroomd en vroom.
Geen blad valt af in deze zoete droom
en groeien doet een palm juist onder druk.
Blijmoedig hang je aan het hemeljuk,
de wortels in de murmelende stroom.
En in jou wiegt de allereerste boom,
je murmelt mee, er heerst zowaar geluk.
Maar als de schellen van de ogen vallen,
en overal het groot verwelken grijnst,
dan sluit de ziel zich binnen vestingwallen
en laat zich daar haar droefheid welgevallen,
terwijl zij stomp tot aan de morgen peinst.
Zo zal haar wereld tot een cel versmallen.

Sebastiaan wrikt de scherpe pijlen uit
het prachtige waar mensen van genoten.
Bloed lekt nog maanden naar de blanke huid
die met barbaarse wellust is beschoten.
Nu spant hij zelf de boog met drie zeloten
en stampt zijn witte paard door elke poel.
Hij heft het schild, het mateloos vergrote,
en reguleert het wereldwijd gejoel.
Maar d’Opperdood die zijn geduchte stoel
op sterren sticht en grondvest op de wolken,
zal lachen om dat vruchteloos gewoel
en spotten met de waan der dwaze volken.
Al lacht de Dooie Dood ons uit, ons rest
te leven tot wij horen: hora est!

Het speenkruid bloeit de sterren van de hemel
en vult mijn ogenblik met geel en groen.
Ver weg de jeugd, het eindeloos gefemel.
Ik hoef niet meer toch nooit genoeg te doen.
Ik hoop nog altijd op een waar sermoen
met samengaan van Voet-maet, Rijm en Reden.
Maar dagen doet nog niet het oogstseizoen:
eerst moet een uiterst strenge vorst doorleden
en duizend slangekoppen zijn vertreden.
Ik moet mij nog met hulp van Schild en Wapen
een weg bevechten naar de Hof van Eden,
wil ik nog ooit in vrede kunnen slapen.
De sleedoorn is een zee van wit in maart.
Zij neemt de ziel omhelzend op en spaart.

verstrooid in schuldig landschap dat wij schiepen.
Papavers wiegen weer het requiem
voor schepselen die om hun vader riepen.
Nu bloeien hier de bloemen van het kwaad,
gezaaid door eeuwenoude vrees en haat.
