De galg kijkt op het strak
gespannen koord,
vier kraaien ( en een merel
die er niet bijhoort).
De lucht is helder als azuur:
geen regenwolk, geen zuchtje wind
in dat prangend laatste uur.
Je telt de zonnestralen op
je bleke huid
en rookt een sigaret.
Je weet verduiveld goed
dat al die schoften
hun zinnen op je kop hebben gezet.
Dan kijk je naar 't gazon:
zes madeliefjes als een krans van wit
tussen fleurig jeugdig groen;
een vlinder die speels fladdert naar een bloem,
een boom die naar de wolken is gericht,
terwijl je leven wegstreft met het warme zonnelicht.
De priester leest een kort gebed.
De beul buigt haast beschaamd het hoofd.
De kraaien krijsen met een holle stem.
Met zachte handen heeft men nu je nek ontbloot
en met een helse kreet van pijn vervaagt
je leven in de grauwe dood.
Je eigendommen worden met een lach verdeeld
en rond je lijkkist wordt een heldenlied gespeeld.
Met bloemen zal men ook je grafzerk tooien:
een martelaar vergeet men niet.
Je buurman zal je mooie bruid wel troosten
met een bruiloft in 't verschiet.
Moraal van dit verhaal:
niet alleen kraaien met hun scherpe navels
doen zich te goed aan 't galgenmaal.
